Why I Started Dr. Sarah Orthodontics
Because People Deserve to Feel Cared For
I did not start my own orthodontic practice because I wanted my name on a sign.
I started it because I believed orthodontic care could feel different, and I wanted every person who walked through our doors to know, almost immediately, that they mattered as a person before we ever talked about their teeth, their treatment options, or what might come next.
Their questions mattered. Their fears mattered. Their goals, their family, their story, and the experiences that brought them to us mattered.
They mattered.
That belief became the beginning of Dr. Sarah Orthodontics & Aesthetics, and years later, it remains the reason behind so many of the decisions we make every day.
I Knew the Kind of Care I Wanted to Give
Before opening my own practice, I spent years practicing orthodontics in a larger corporate environment, where I gained experience, built meaningful relationships, and learned lessons that helped shape the orthodontist I am today.
Those years also helped me understand exactly what I wanted to create if I ever had the opportunity to build a practice of my own.
I wanted the freedom to make the patient experience personal from beginning to end, which meant having the time to listen when someone had a question, giving parents space to tell me what they were worried about, helping children and teenagers understand that we were talking with them rather than simply talking about them, and making sure adults who had spent years feeling self-conscious about their smiles could walk into an orthodontic office without ever feeling judged.
More than anything, I wanted every treatment recommendation to begin with a very simple question.
What is right for this person?
That philosophy still guides our practice today because orthodontic treatment should never feel like something that is being sold to you, rushed onto a timeline, or chosen because it is convenient for someone other than the patient.
I want you to understand what I see, why I am recommending something, what your options are, and when the best recommendation may simply be to wait and keep watching.
I never wanted those ideas to become beautiful words that lived only on our website.
I wanted people to actually feel them when they walked through our doors.
I Wanted to Come Home and Build Something Meaningful
Virginia Beach is not simply where my office happens to be located. It is home.
I grew up here, went to school here, built relationships here, and now I am raising my own family here, so when the opportunity came to create something of my own, I wanted to build it in the community that helped shape me.
That makes this practice deeply personal because the people who walk through our doors are not just patients on a schedule, they are our neighbors, our friends, the families we see around town, the children we watch grow, and the people we may run into at the grocery store, at a sporting event, or somewhere near the beach.
Over time, we get to know entire families because one child sends a sibling, a parent eventually decides it is finally their turn to do something for their own smile, and patients who trusted us with their care tell their friends about their experience.
That is when an orthodontic practice becomes something much bigger than a place where teeth are straightened.
It becomes part of a community.
I wanted ours to be the kind of place where people felt good walking through the door, where children could relax, where parents felt heard, and where everyone understood that being cared for was not something they had to earn.
I Did Not Build It Alone

One of the most meaningful parts of this entire journey is the team standing beside me, because when I made the decision to leave corporate orthodontics and build a practice around this vision of personal care, I was surrounded by people who believed in what we were trying to create.
They took that leap with me.
Years later, the original team members who helped open these doors are still here, and that means more to me than I could probably ever put into words because consistency like that does not happen simply because people enjoy their job descriptions.
It happens when people believe in what they are building together.
You can design a beautiful orthodontic office, invest in incredible technology, purchase the newest equipment, and create efficient systems that make the days run smoothly, but there is one thing you simply cannot manufacture.
Genuine care.
That comes from people who remember your name, notice when you seem nervous, stop what they are doing to answer a question, celebrate your progress, and understand that sometimes the smallest interaction can completely change the way someone feels about being here.
As our practice has grown, we have welcomed new people into our family, but the standard has remained the same because we look for team members who care about people first, then bring their individual strengths, personalities, and talents into the experience we create together.
Different roles, different personalities, and different responsibilities can all work beautifully together when the heartbeat behind them is the same.
Take care of people.
Then Our Patients Started Telling the Story for Us
There is something especially meaningful about hearing patients describe the practice we hoped to create in their own words because, while we can tell you what we believe and explain the philosophy behind our care, their experiences are what show whether those beliefs are actually being lived out.
Over time, patients began describing their visits with words like kind, comfortable, welcoming, thoughtful, supportive, and family, and those words mean far more to me than anything we could ever write about ourselves.
A Confidence She Had Never Experienced Before
Dr. Karla shared that she had spent much of her life feeling insecure about her smile before eventually finding her way to our office, and when she described what that experience meant to her, she wrote:
“I had been insecure about my smile for most of my life, but Dr. Sarah gave me a level of confidence…”
She also described the warmth she experienced from our team from her very first visit and how meaningful it was to feel genuinely cared for throughout the process.
When someone tells us that they spent years feeling insecure about their smile and now experience a confidence they did not have before, it is a powerful reminder that orthodontics can reach far beyond moving teeth into beautiful positions.
There is a person living behind every smile we treat, and sometimes the change they feel inside becomes just as meaningful as the change everyone else can see.
Care She Could Feel
Bianca came to our practice after moving from San Diego and needing to continue orthodontic treatment, which meant she already had another orthodontic experience to compare with ours.
What she noticed here was not simply the treatment itself.
She noticed the people.
Bianca wrote:
“You can really feel how much they care about their patients.”
She described our team as kind, thoughtful, and considerate, talked about the warmth she felt in the office, and shared that she would actually miss the practice when she returned to San Diego.
I think about that often because when someone is finishing a chapter of her life in Virginia and one of the places she says she will miss is her orthodontic office, that tells us something meaningful happened beyond appointments, wires, aligners, and treatment plans.
A relationship was built.
That is exactly the kind of connection I hoped this practice could create.
From Discouraged to Feeling Like Family
Then there is Alexis, whose orthodontic journey began years before she ever walked through our doors and included treatment interruptions, shifting teeth, an open bite, discomfort, years in braces, and the discouragement of still not loving her smile after everything she had already been through.
By the time she found us, orthodontics was not a new experience for her, which makes what she eventually shared about our office especially meaningful.
From her first phone call, she described feeling listened to, supported, and genuinely cared for, and she wrote something that goes directly to the heart of why I started this practice:
“You are treated like family, like a sister. The energy in this office is calm, welcoming, and elevated.”
She went on to describe a team that felt genuinely invested in her outcome and shared that a long, stressful orthodontic journey had finally become an experience she could actually love.
That one stays with me because family was never supposed to be a marketing word here.
It was supposed to be a feeling.
When someone who has been through a difficult orthodontic journey chooses that word herself, without us asking her to, it tells me we are protecting the reason this practice was created in the first place.
Their Words Matter More Than Ours
Those are three stories, but there are so many others, each belonging to a different person with a different smile, a different treatment plan, and a different reason for walking through our doors.
What continues to move me is how often the same ideas appear in their experiences because patients talk about feeling listened to, welcomed, comfortable, confident, supported, and cared for as if they were family.
Those words mean more to me than any advertisement, award, or marketing campaign ever could because they tell me that what began as an idea years ago is becoming something people can actually feel.
Take exceptional care of the person, not only the smile.
That was the vision.
That is still the goal.
The Smile Matters. The Person Matters More.
Clinical excellence matters tremendously to me, and orthodontics is a profession I spent years studying, training for, and continuing to learn because I care deeply about thoughtful treatment planning, precision, healthy bites, beautiful smiles, modern technology, and results that we can all feel proud of when treatment is complete.
But excellent orthodontics and excellent human care should never have to compete with each other.
You deserve both.
You deserve an orthodontist who pays attention to the smallest details of your treatment while still looking up from those details long enough to see the person sitting in front of her.
You deserve to understand what is happening, feel comfortable asking questions, hear honest explanations when there is more than one treatment option, and know when something is necessary just as clearly as you know when something can wait.
You deserve a team that remembers you, understands that you may be nervous, celebrates your wins, and treats kindness as part of excellent healthcare rather than an added bonus.
None of those things are luxuries.
They are what healthcare should feel like.
Can an Orthodontic Office Change the World?

That probably sounds like a very big question for a place filled with brackets, aligners, retainers, scanners, and a whole lot of coffee, but I have come to believe that changing the world does not always begin with one enormous act.
Sometimes it begins with the way we treat the person standing directly in front of us.
We may not be able to change the entire world from one orthodontic office in Virginia Beach, but every day we have the opportunity to change a small piece of someone’s world by making a nervous child feel brave, helping an overwhelmed parent feel understood, giving a teenager space to become more confident, or truly listening to an adult who has spent decades hiding their smile.
We can choose patience when rushing would be easier, honesty when a conversation requires it, kindness when someone needs it, and human connection even as technology continues changing nearly every other part of what we do.
We can change the little piece of the world that walks through our doors every day.
Maybe that is how meaningful change really happens, not all at once and not through grand gestures, but through hundreds of small decisions about how we choose to treat one another.
One person at a time.
One interaction at a time.
One little piece of the world at a time.
This Is Why We Are Here
Years after making the decision to create this practice, I still believe in the same thing that started it.
Every person who walks through our doors deserves to feel cared for.
We are there for every person, through every stage of their experience with us—not only when the schedule is light, not only when everything is going perfectly, and not only when someone is beginning an exciting new treatment.
Orthodontics will continue changing because there will always be new technology, new techniques, new aligners, new software, new research, and new ways for us to provide excellent care, and we will continue learning, evolving, and asking ourselves how we can become better.
There is one thing, however, that I never want us to modernize our way out of.
Human connection.
Braces, Invisalign, and other orthodontic treatments may be what first bring people through our doors, and a healthy, beautiful smile may be the result we are working toward together, but when treatment is finished and someone looks back on the time they spent with us, I hope they remember something beyond the before-and-after photographs.
I hope they remember how we made them feel.
That is why I started Dr. Sarah Orthodontics & Aesthetics.
And that is the practice we will keep choosing to be.
Welcome to Our Family
If you are looking for an orthodontist in Virginia Beach and wondering whether our office might be the right place for you, your child, or your family, come meet us and tell us what brought you here.
Tell us what matters to you, what makes you nervous, what questions you have, and what you hope might be different when your orthodontic journey is complete.
We will listen.
Because before we talk about braces, Invisalign, treatment timing, or what your smile may look like in the future, we want to get to know the person behind it.
That is where your care begins.
